YOUR COLLEGE EXPLORATION STARTS HERE

Welcome to College Atlas.

Explore 3,902 U.S. colleges and discover academic and nearby connections. A few quick tips will show you around.

A NOTE ON PERSPECTIVE

A map of possibilities, not a ranking.

College Atlas uses a fixed, provisional IPEDS 2024 snapshot of 3,902 active, degree-granting institutions in the 50 states and D.C. Branch campuses have their own institution IDs. It is not a live directory.

Reading the landscape

Location comes from the institution directory. Color identifies public, private nonprofit, or private for-profit control. Drag in any direction to move the map, or use the arrow controls. Select a state to frame its boundary automatically. Selecting a college centers it and adjusts the zoom to keep its connected markers and curved links visible. Fit connections restores that view after manual panning or zooming. Changing the connection mode or filters refits the current network when its connections change. State selection switches back to state framing; Fit map then returns to that state, and All states returns to the national view. Enrollment bands are available in the college details.

Your visit

A new session starts with no college selected. Refreshing this tab restores your filters, selection, connection view, and map position. Choices stay in this browser tab, and starting or skipping the welcome is remembered in this browser. Start exploring launches small prompts beside the controls. Use How to use to replay this tour at any time. If browser storage is unavailable, you can still explore; choices and tip dismissal may not be saved.

Acceptance rates

Fall 2024 acceptance rates are admitted applicants divided by applicants among first-time, degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates, from IPEDS ADM2024. Rates are available for 1,779 institutions and displayed to one decimal place. Filters use the unrounded values. The other 2,123 institutions show Unavailable; this may mean unreported or inapplicable data and does not imply a 0% or 100% rate, or an open-admission policy. Genuine reported 0% and 100% values are preserved. These historical institutional rates are not individual admission probabilities.

What connects two colleges?

Academic overlap compares the snapshot’s leading subject families from completions reported for July 2023–June 2024. Candidates must share the same institution level and at least one family. They are ordered by shared families divided by distinct families across both colleges (Jaccard overlap), then straight-line distance, then institution ID. Up to six connections are shown.

Nearby orders colleges of any level by straight-line geographic distance, then institution ID. Distances are not road miles or driving times. Both connection views honor the State, Institution level, Academic area, and Acceptance rate filters; the name search only filters the browse list and map. The selected college and its connections remain available as context even when they fall outside the name search. State zoom follows the state boundary. Selecting a college then switches to a view centered on it with all of its displayed connections in view, even if they span several states.

What this does not tell you

Subject families describe the mix of awards, including graduate awards. They are not a measure of quality, program availability today, admissions chances, or personal fit. Completion counts and shares are omitted because the source extraction aggregates multiple CIP hierarchy levels. Unavailable subject data does not imply that a program is absent. Acceptance-rate values have been checked against source applicant/admit counts; other admissions fields and the source’s unreliable missing-value labels are not shown.
